چکیده

Freezing of polydisperse hard spheres is studied by Monte Carlo simulation and the results are interpreted with a cell model of the solid. The results supplement an earlier study of freezing of nearly monodisperse hard spheres and, within the assumption of a substitutionally disordered solid, a complete description of the freezing behavior is obtained. The density and polydispersity of the precipitate are characterized by a single curve, regardless of the composition of the fluid from which it is formed. Fractionation enables a fluid of arbitrary polydispersity to precipitate a solid of small polydispersity, dispeling the long-held notion of a fluid-phase ‘‘critical’’ polydispersity, beyond which it cannot form a solid. Nevertheless, a primary conclusion from the previous study is confirmed: a solid crystalline phase of polydispersity exceeding 5.7% of the average sphere diameter cannot be precipitated from a fluid phase. @S1063-651X~98!04312-8#

Fractionated crystallization in a polydisperse mixture of hard spheres

We consider the nature of the fluid–solid phase transition in a polydisperse mixture of hard spheres. For a sufficiently polydisperse mixture (s.0.085) crystallization occurs with simultaneous fractionation. At the fluid–solid boundary, a broad fluid diameter distribution is split into a number of narrower fractions, each of which then crystallize. The number of crystalline phases increases wit...

Monte Carlo study of freezing of polydisperse hard spheres.

We have established the solid-fluid coexistence region for a system of polydisperse hard spheres with near Gaussian diameter distributions, as a function of polydispersity. Our approach employs Monte Carlo simulation in the isobaric semigrand ensemble with a Gaussian activity distribution. Gibbs-Duhem integration is used to trace the coexistence pressure as a function of the variance of the imp...

On the stability of polydisperse colloidal crystals

2014 The recently developed density functional theory of freezing is applied to an investigation of the mechanical and thermodynamic stability of polydisperse colloidal crystals. The colloidal particles are modelled by hard spheres with a continuous distribution p(03C3) of additive diameters. It is shown that such solid solutions cease to be stable beyond a critical degree of polydispersity, wh...

The stability limit of the fluid phase of polydisperse sticky spheres

It has been shown by Stell [J. Stat. Phys., 63, 1203 (1991)] that at low temperature monodisperse sticky spheres collapse to form coexisting close-packed solid and infinitely dilute gases. We show that polydisperse sticky spheres also collapse and calculate the collapse temperature. The polydisperse spheres separate into fractions with narrower polydispersities which can then solidify. This is ...

Simple effective rule to estimate the jamming packing fraction of polydisperse hard spheres.

A recent proposal in which the equation of state of a polydisperse hard-sphere mixture is mapped onto that of the one-component fluid is extrapolated beyond the freezing point to estimate the jamming packing fraction ϕJ of the polydisperse system as a simple function of M1M3/M22, where Mk is the kth moment of the size distribution. An analysis of experimental and simulation data of ϕJ for a lar...
